Swarm
We were cleaning up dinner on our backyard deck the other night when I heard this slight buzzing sound coming from the next block over. My first thought was that it sounded like something from that 80’s horror flick “Swarm”, but I dismissed it and kept cleaning up. Then it happened! Thousands of bee’s came over our back fence and consumed our backyard. Terrified, I yelled at everyone to get into the house and proceeded to scoop up our four year old and run into the house. We watched as the bees settled into one of our bushes in the back yard and started to make a hive. I have never seen anything like this and didn’t know what to do, so I called 911. I was given a name of beekeeper and he came out. I found that my fear was unwarranted as “Chuck” the beekeeper proceeded to tell me, and then show me, that honey bees are very docile. Without any protective gear he removed the 10,000+ bees from our bush and put them in a portable hive (Check out the video below). The whole time he was teaching us about honey bees! It was like a discovery channel moment. Over the course of two hours I went from being terrified of these invading bees, to standing 10 feet from their hive listening to Chuck and thinking this was the coolest thing ever.
The whole experience reminded me of what it feels like for many people when God invades their life. They are often scared of Him, afraid that he is going to sting them. But once God settles in, and we have the opportunity to hear from those who know him well, it turns out to be a pretty cool thing. God isn’t there to sting us but to produce something sweet in our lives.
