Q & A: “If God knew Satan and Adam & Eve would sin why did He create them?“

I recently began an e-mail correspondence with a pastor in the Philippines who discovered our website. He is doing a great ministry in a rural area and has led many to the Lord. Many of his e-mails contain great questions from people in his church. I took some time writing my response. This series of blogs contain those questions and answers.

Question: What do you think of the passage that says women shouldn’t speak in church (1 Corinthians 14:34)?

Answer: With regards to your question, “If God knew Satan and Adam & Eve would sin why did He create them?”. This is a difficult one. I don’t know of any passage of Scripture that addresses this question directly, so what I am about to share comes from reason instead of the scripture. I think an equally good question to ask is, “Why do we have kids when we know they will sin and may rebel against us, their parents?” Most people who want kids, have children in order to have someone they can love and that might love them back. I think the same is true with God. He created the Angels, (The devil was one of God’s angels) and humans to pour out his love into with the hope that they would love him back. But for humanity and angelic beings to really love Him, God had to give them “free will”. They had to be given the real possibility of choosing not to love God in order for their love to be genuine. So God created us with the ability to choose to love him or not, (free will), in order for the love we show to be real. If God made us so that we couldn’t chose to do anything but love him and follow his ways, than we would be like robots and our love would be forced not free.
