This is What We Train For
Last week I attended a meeting where one of the Bishops in my denomination was speaking. He started off sharing about his son. His son, who was in late 20’s, had been diagnosed with cancer and died this past year. The bishop was understandably overwhelmed by the death of his son. He was thankful for the many people who had send cards and e-mails but he said that there were some who wondered whether he was having doubts about God during this time. The bishop’s response really struck me. He responded to the questions about the strength of his faith during these tough times by saying, “This is what we train for.”
I admire the perspective of the Bishop. He doesn’t believe that God will keep us from all difficulties, hurts, or suffering. Instead he believes that growing in the Christian life is training so that we can handle the problems life will throw at us.
I want to have that perspective and I want to make sure I am training well.

I agree with the Bishop that my training by the Lord did prepare me for a difficult time in my life. He is faithful as He said He would be.

I find this situation like that of sports. When you train and repeat and do things over and over again it really helps you in the end. Even though at times it seems like it isn’t doing anything for you when you come across those difficult games and matches, your training is what makes the difference.

I like that! I want that too. I see that the Lord also purges any unbelief I have had if I allow the Lord to hem me - a wise man I heard, once said that!
